The Scottish and Celtic Heritage Festival will be held on Saturday, April 2,2011, from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Parkersburg City Park Pavilion. The Festival could use a couple of volunteers to help sell raffle tickets during the Festival for whatever amount of time volunteers might be able to donate. Also need a couple of volunteers to help out with children's games which will include Sack the Castle, Golf, Design Your Own Tartan Coloring Contest, make a Shamrock Necklace, etc. All supplies for the various activities will be provided, and volunteers will be instructed on any simple craft projects before starting; it's mostly just overseeing. Volunteers with the committee will be available if there are concerns, questions, etc. Those who volunteer to help out can have free admission all day for the Festival. The Children’s Home Society of WV is in need of host homes to serve the housing need of teens and older youth, not involved in the juvenile justice or social services system, in a temporary homeless situation. The Society provides training, a small financial stipend, and 24-hour support to the volunteer families. A Food Drive & Resource Fair will be held in observance of the National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, November 19th, at the Parking Lot at the Children’s Home Society, 1739 St. Marys Avenue, Parkersburg, and is being sponsored by your local Continuum of Care. This Fair is to learn more about the agencies currently providing services to those experiencing homelessness, and to learn what you can do to help. The West Virginia University School of Dentistry has launched the National Museum of Dentistry Mouth Power Exhibit for children. The Actors Guild will be having a costume shop inventory day on Saturday, October 16th from Noon to 4:00 p.m. with refreshments provided. Participants
will help to log costumes, mark the items, and take pictures of all the clothing they have at the Actors Guild which will help to catalogue what they have so that they can be more efficient as well as provide a list to people who may want to rent from them. The Mid-Ohio Valley Continuum of Care is providing a resource fair for community members and homeless during National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week being held November 13th – November 19th. They will need 10 volunteers to help serve and clean up at the Mission of Hope Dinner at the Extreme Ministries on November 13th, will need 5 volunteers on November 15th to pass out hygiene bags at the Salvation Army, will need 15 volunteers on November 16th to pass out food at the Friendship Kitchen, and they will need 4 volunteers on November 18th to pass out resources at the House to Home. Amedisys Hospice of Parkersburg is seeking volunteers to help terminally ill patients and their families. Direct Patient Volunteers are needed to visit individuals in their home or a facility 2-4 hours per week; Volunteers are needed to head up projects in facilities where Amedisys serve patients; and One-time Special Project Volunteers are needed where the staff will deliver whatever contribution your group would like to make to the homebound. Volunteers (preferably 23-25 years or older) are needed to monitor the children during visitations with their non-custodial parent. The Program will provide all the training necessary, a background check and application are required. Mountwood Park is in desperate need of volunteers to help with maintenance/grounds keeping. Such volunteers needs to be in good health, and have work boots and work clothing. If interested, contact Mark Arthur at 304-679-1410.

Volunteers are needed for the week prior to and the week of The Highland School Summer Camp to help prepare the campus, arrange campsites, work in the garden, carry out minor construction, and help with activities during the Camp. Approximately 45 volunteers are needed for the “Lose the Training Wheels” adaptive bicycling camp which will be held July 7-11 at the Parkersburg YMCA. Challenged Athletes of West Virginia, in partnership with The Arc of the Mid-Ohio Valley, will be hosting such Camp. Volunteers are asked to work one 75-minute session per day (or more); they would like to keep the same volunteer working with the same child all week. Upcoming Disaster Preparedness Trainings

The American Red Cross- Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter, The Volunteer Action Center, and The Local Emergency Planning Committee are happy to provide you with the following disaster preparedness training opportunities. All training opportunities are free, but some classes are a prerequisite for the next class so they must be completed in order. Classes are expected to fill quickly so please register early. Mass Care Overview - The purpose of this Disaster Services training is to provide an overview of the activities performed by the Mass Care group in support of a disaster relief operation.

Spring is just around the corner. It will be a welcome relief after the harsh winter we have had. Why not look over the following volunteer opportunities to see if there might be something you would be interested in, and then volunteer some of your time to make a difference in someone’s life.

The PS Project Recovery and Support Network, Inc., which offers Housing and Community Support Programs, would welcome carpenters, electricians, plumbers, painters as volunteers, as well as volunteers to go shopping, lead activities, or teach crafts or skills. The PS Project would welcome donations of office supplies, food, towels, sheets, personal care products, furniture and household supplies. If you would like to assist the PS Project by either volunteering some of your time or by donating items and would like more information, please call 304-485-8831.

The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to work in the kitchen and to deliver meals to shut-ins in the community. They would also welcome volunteers to work in their Thrift Store. The Alzheimer’s Association, WV Chapter, has a variety of opportunities for volunteers. Opportunities include Grant Writing in which you would assist in writing grants by collecting information, researching grant opportunities, etc., Advocacy which include a visit/call/e-mail/write letters to representatives, recruit other advocates, etc., or Community Outreach which would include delivering educational material in your area, newsletter distribution, posting flyers, etc. Volunteers are also needed to assist in their special events. On Saturday, April 10th Mountwood Park will hold their Third Annual Make It Shine. Individuals, groups, or organizations are welcome to participate in this event. The WV Department of Environmental Protection and Division of Highways provide assistance to Mountwood Park to keep our state clean. Mountwood Park could use volunteers for office work which would include calling vendors for the various events held at the Park. The Child Care Food Program located on the second floor of the Dils Building provides services to 10 counties. To participate in this Program you will need to obtain a license from your local Department of Health & Human Resources (DHHR). The following are programs that might work for you: Facility Day Care (12 children), Home Day Care (6 children), Informal Day Care (3 children), or Relative Only Care (6 children). "MIning for Leadership" Workshop

The Volunteer Action Center is thrilled to be able to offer a workshop/book signing with Glenn Ray, author of Tons of Stone Above My Head. The workshop will be held on Wednesday March 17, from 9-11. As a coal miner/supervisor, he learned some very practical leadership skills in dealing with people, which actually translate well into our world. Topics Glenn will address are employee orientation - how to transmit the culture, values, expectations of your organization to a new employee; developing models for teamwork, and identifying personal goals for success with your work and life. His stories, and the lessons they teach, are guaranteed to stick in your mind. The cost is $25 and includes the meal and all materials. Glenn's book will be available for sale. The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers for their Road to Recovery Program. This Program provides transportation to cancer patients to enable them to get to their scheduled doctor’s appointments, tests, and treatments. Drivers would need to have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and insurance. The driver can choose the days he wishes to drive a patient. There would be training available for all drivers. The drivers do not have to do any lifting. They only need to transport the patient from home to hospital/doctor office and back. The American Cancer Society is also looking for volunteers for the Reach to Recovery Program. This Program provides a trained facilitator to work on a one-on-one basis with a breast cancer patient. They are in need of direct “friendly visiting” volunteers to provide respite for a caregiver and/or companionship for a terminally ill person. Visits average about 2 to 3 hours per week. Extensive training and TB test provided. Background and reference checks are required. Their hospice brings service to the home or facility where the patient lives. The Alzheimer’s Association, WV Chapter has the following events coming up and would appreciate volunteers for any or all of these events:
Their annual Thanks for the Memories Luncheon in May in Charleston to present the Rockefeller Award. There is a golf tournament in June with a need to find sponsors, recruiting teams and much more. There is a Birthday Bash being held in February in Charleston. The First Presbyterian Church will be holding their annual Mid-Ohio Valley Community Christmas Day Dinner from Noon to 2:30 p.m. on Christmas Day in their Stevenson Hall located at 1341 Juliana Street, Parkersburg. Rides to and from the church will be provided for those who need transportation, and meals will be delivered to the shut-ins. As a volunteer, you could walk the dogs; cuddle the cats; take animals to nursing homes, hospitals for visitations; help with special events such as open house, rummage sale, basket bingo, etc.; volunteer your handyman services such as inside repairs, cleaning, painting, fix-ups; just to name a few opportunities. Rebecca Noble, a well-known artist, has done a gorgeous painting on behalf of the Save-A-Kitty Feral Cat Program. The painting is being raffled for $5.00 a ticket, with the drawing being held on December 21, 2009. The proceeds from such raffle will be used to buy dry cat food for the Cat Program which is extremely low on food at the present time. If you would like to volunteer, the Program would like you to attend a monthly meeting to acquaint yourself with who they are and what they do. The mission statement of the Program is dedicated to the well-being of free-roaming and feral cats/kittens, and their goal is to educate society of the importance of (TNR), Trap, Neuter and Return, and Colony Management. House to Home provides the homeless community with household furnishings for their newly obtained apartment. House to Home is also accepting donations of sleeping bags, blankets, hats, scarves, gloves, coats, boots, sweaters, ear muffs, and socks to be given to the homeless community for Christmas. The Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park will be sponsoring the Trees of Our Heritage from November 8, 2009 to December 31, 2009. Come to the Blennerhassett Museum and see trees from all over the world. There is an admission fee. On November 8th, a reception will be held at the Museum from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. featuring entertainment by area groups and musicians. The Victorian Society will provide refreshments and the Victorian Father Christmas will be available for children. Admission is free. The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with a silent auction and live auction beginning at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00, available in advance or at the door. Proceeds from this cooperative event go to support the children and families served by the Children’s Home Society of WV and the Art Center’s Kids In The Arts programs. The House to Home could use volunteers to do clerical work such as answering the telephone, signing in persons that come to the shelter, etc. The facility has a computer, has laundry service and provides daytime housing. Volunteers could also be used in their Clothing Closet which provides men’s and women’s clothing. Donations of men’s and women’s clothing, dishes, etc. would be most welcome by the House to Home. The Shelter is open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Rebecca Noble, a local well-know artist, has done a gorgeous painting on behalf of the Save-A-Kitty Feral Cat Program. The painting is being raffled for $5.00 a ticket with a total of 100 tickets to be sold with the drawing being held on December 21, 2009. The painting is currently on display at Pet Supplies Plus next to T.J. Maxx. The proceeds will be used to buy dry cat food for the Cat Program which is extremely low on food at the present time. If you would like to volunteer, the Program would like you to attend a monthly meeting to acquaint yourself with who they are and what they do. The mission statement of the Program is dedicated to the well-being of free-roaming and feral cats/kittens, and their goal is to educate society on the importance of (TNR) Trap, Neuter and Return, and colony management. Rich is Senior Vice President of the West Virginia Credit Union League, where he has been employed since March of 1988. The League is headquartered in Parkersburg and is the non-profit trade association for 107 credit unions located throughout the state. On a daily basis, Rich has been active in the League’s governmental affairs, and media relations activities. He is also responsible for maintaining strategic partnerships with its third party vendors and serves as a resource to credit unions and chapters on various matters.

The Fall Season is just around the corner and with Fall comes the beautiful Fall Foliage. If you would like to do some volunteer services for your community, here are a few opportunities that may be of interest to you.

The Special Olympics 2009 Fall Games will be held October 30th to November 1st in Parkersburg. If you would be interested in this opportunity to provide a memorable experience for all involved, especially the Special Olympics West Virginia Athletes, please call Linda Quinn at 304-345-9310 or 1-800-926-1616 for an application and a schedule. Upon receiving your completed schedule and application, volunteer positions will be filled with consideration of your preference. Volunteers will be sent a notification of assigned schedule and registration information, which will include directions, etc.

Would you like to manage an Exchange Store for the Veterans’ Museum of the Mid-Ohio Valley? The Store offers a variety of items for sale; such as new and used men’s and women’s clothing, boots, hardware, toys, dishes, to name a few items, which can be purchased at retail or yard sale prices. The Exchange Store is located on Schultz Street. If you are interested in this opportunity and would like more information, please contact Gary Farris at 304-420-0332.

Volunteers who provide support to the Police are needed to work at the City Park Substation. Applicants can work one day a week for 4 to 5 hours or choose other arrangements that are more convenient for them. This volunteer job often appeals to women who have a son or other relative in law enforcement or the military. Men who have a military background or who have always had an interest in law enforcement also seem to enjoy it. This is a very comfortable work setting. You will be trained individually until you are comfortable working on your own. An excellent way to support our local law enforcement, as well as the entire community. The 21st annual Volcano Days Festival will be held at Mountwood Park on September 25-26-27, 2009. Activities for the weekend include Music, Little Mister and Miss Mountwood Pageant, Old Fashion Engine Demonstrations, a Flea Market and Crafters. There is something for the whole family, so come and join them and meet their 2009 Miss Volcano. Volunteers are welcome at each monthly event held at Mountwood. The Park could also use volunteers at their Visitor’s Center which is fully stocked with West Virginia made products. To learn more about the Park, become a member to serve on the Friends of Mountwood, which is a volunteer organization dedicated to preserving and protecting Mountwood Park. The Kids First Program is looking for volunteers as Exchange Monitors and Visitation Monitors from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday evenings. Volunteers are also needed on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. while the parents attend support groups. If you like doing crafts with children, reading stories to children, and doing other activities with children, you are the volunteer that this Program is looking for. On September 22nd an End of Summer Hawaiian Luau on the Ruble Sternwheeler will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with all proceeds to go the American Alzheimer Association. Here is a date you might want to remember. On Sunday, October 11th , FaithLink is sponsoring Faith In Action Sunday Sundaes from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church. How about brunch with Margaret Blennerhassett at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 24th on the Blennerhassett Island? You can climb aboard the sternwheeler to the Blennerhassett Island for brunch and also enjoy a tour of the mansion, and a narrated wagon ride. Or, you could enjoy a Sunday Sundae Cruise around the Blennerhassett Island on September 27th. A brief stop on the Island will be made for hard dipped ice cream with your choice of topping. You may wish to volunteer at the Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park and the Blennerhassett Museum to participate in the many fun activities held at the both the Park and the Museum. Could you give an hour or two of your time to volunteer in your community? If you are a student or work part-time or need more job experience, volunteering is a great way to learn valuable skills and experience. Here are a few opportunities that may be of interest to you.

The Heaven Sent Daycare would welcome volunteers to assist in their childcare center by reading to the children, supervising the children during circle time, and show and tell time. These are just a few activities and games that the children are involved in at the Daycare. The Daycare is open from 5:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Dudley Avenue Adult Center has recently opened in Parkersburg and would welcome volunteers as well as new clients. The Center provides daytime supervision for seniors, and they create activities to keep each client both active in body as well as in mind. The Center is set up to accommodate people on a weekly basis, monthly basis, or just day-to-day basis. The Center has the capacity to serve 25-30 people. If you are interested in services for seniors or you are interested in volunteering some of your time at the Center and would like additional information, please call Dorthy Fordyce, Geriatric Care Specialist, at 304-424-5005.

The Humane Society of Parkersburg would welcome volunteers at least 16 years of age, or if younger, accompanied by an adult. Volunteers must complete an application form and attend a volunteer orientation session class which is held every month and requires scheduling in advance. As a volunteer, you could walk the dogs; cuddle the cats;
take animals to adopt-a-thon events, nursing homes, or hospitals for visitations; help with special events such as open house, rummage sales, etc; just to name a few opportunities. If you are interested in volunteering, you could complete a Volunteer Application on line or at the Shelter. If you are interested in donating items, the Humane Society has a Wish List of items that are needed on a daily basis. Would you like to be a clown? The Parkersburg Clown Club is looking for men and women volunteers who enjoy helping others benefit from a few joyful moments of fun. Their goal is to entertain children and adults in a non-taxing and anonymous manner. Training in most cases, can be done on the job. The Club may visit the local hospitals, nursing homes, birthday parties, grand openings, especially at parades, and occasionally at schools. Members supply their own costumes and make-up. They guarantee that the pleasure you give others will more than compensate for your donated time. Monthly meetings are held to catch up on activities. The Arc of the Mid-Ohio Valley will be holding their annual meeting and dance on September 22nd. Would you like to volunteer at the dance and perhaps take pictures or help serve refreshments? As a volunteer, you could assist The Arc in the many activities and projects they have. Perhaps you would like to volunteer at one of the Noah’s Arc Thrift Stores which are open Monday through Saturday. If you are looking for furniture, household/kitchen items, vintage and contemporary clothing, music or video, small gifts, or hard to find items priced at 50-75% less then comparable new items, then perhaps The Arc would be the place to shop. If you have left over items from a garage/yard sale, The Arc would be glad to take the items off your hands. The Friendship Kitchen of the North Parkersburg Baptist Church is looking for a volunteer to drive the Church’s van. He would pick up passengers and take them to the Church for a hot meal on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays of each week. Meals are served from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers are also needed to assist in the serving of the meals on the above dates. The Willows Nursing Home is looking for volunteers to work with the residents on a one-on-one basis such as reading to them and visiting with them. Volunteers are also needed to assist with the activities provided to the residents. Volunteer drivers are needed Monday through Friday of each week by the Salvation Army. Volunteers would use their own vehicle to deliver meals to the shutins in the Parkersburg area. Volunteers come in about 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and load such meals in their vehicle for delivery. The Salvation Army likes to have all meals delivered before 12:00 noon. Such volunteer drivers would have approximately 6 to 7 stops on their route, and delivery takes less than 1 hour. Volunteers are also needed to help serve the evening hot meal from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army. If you are interested in making a difference in the lives of the terminally ill, or those who are grieving, by giving of your time to assist a patient, family member, or the office staff, then you are the person that the Amedisys Hospice of Parkersburg (ServCare) is looking for as a Hospice Volunteers. Hospice offers three (3) types of volunteer opportunities: Direct Care Volunteers, age 16 and older; Clerical/Administrative Volunteers, 12 and older; Special Projects Volunteers, of any age. New Hospice Volunteers participate in free training, and on average, give 4-8 hours per month. If you like to make a difference, are non-judgemental, are caring, and are compassionate, you have the qualities to become a Hospice Volunteer. The Children’s Home Society of WV has volunteer opportunities for adults to assist with the after-school program at McKinley Elementary School. Hours available are from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Activities include homework help, recreation, and craft activities. The Society also has volunteer opportunities 1 to 2 days per week to assist with maintaining and organizing the Clothing Closet starting in September. The Neighborhood Celebration will be held on Saturday, September 19th in the parking lot at theChildren’s Home Society. This neighborhood building event is filled with fun, food, and information sharing. The Wood County Habitat for Humanity is expanding their ReStore and they are looking for two types of volunteers who are willing to work a minimum of one four-hour shift per week. Volunteers are needed as (1) Customer Service Specialists whose duties would include greeting and assisting customers, answering telephone calls, and using the cash register; (2) Material Handlers whose duties would include accepting donated materials, assisting with pick-up of materials, pricing, cleaning, and arranging items in the ReStore. The Habitat for Humanity would also welcome volunteers in the construction of a new home located on Winding Ridge Road. Kids First - Hearing Services

Children ages 3,4,5,or 6 who lack insurance coverage may be eligible for free hearing aid services and supplies. This is funded by WV BlueCross/Blue Shield and administered by the Office of Maternal, Child and Family Health (DHHR) and is part of Governor Manchin's Kids First Initiative. This project is open to all children who meet the eligibility requirement and are not discriminated against based on race, religion, or national origins. Children are ineligible who have Medicaid or Children's Health Insurance, or those children who have commercial coverage that include this benefit. All payments are subject to the availability of funds and claims will be paid in the order received. For more information, contact Robin Simmons at 1-800-642-9704.

Back to School Supplies Needed

The United Way Alliance will again partner with the community to provide backpacks and school supplies for underprivileged children in a nine-county area (Calhoun, Jackson, Pleasants, Ritchie, Roane, Tyler, Wirt and Wood Counties in WV and Belpre/Little Hocking in OH). Donations of supplies and financial support from the ommunity are crucial to keeping this valuable program ongoing. They are hopeful that your organization will consider an investment in this project. Items needed are: No. 2 pencils, 70 ct. spiral notebooks, folders, pens (blue,black, and/or red), college ruled paper, wide ruled paper and standard crayons. Share your skills, your knowledge, and interests with someone and with your community. Become a VOLUNTEER! Here are a few opportunities that may be of interest to you.

If you have some time to spare this summer between June 29th and August 7th, the Energy Express could use your help. Energy Express is a program designed for students to have fun with reading, writing, art, drama, and recreation along with breakfast and lunch. Volunteers are also needed as servers in the kitchen. The Program is being offered at Madison Elementary School, Martin Elementary School, and Franklin Elementary School from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 Noon. If your interest should go a little further than just a few hours, the West Virginia University Extension Office is in need of volunteers to be part of their “Reading Train”, in which volunteers would go from room to room reading with children. If either and/or the Energy Express Program or the “Reading Train” is of interest to you and you would like additional information, please contact Jodi Smith at 304-424-1960.

The United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley will begin forming the United Way Campaign team in August. The United Way Alliance is always looking for eager people to help. The time commitment involved for a campaign team member is approximately 3 hours. The Children’s Home Society of WV is in need of Host Homes to serve the short-term housing need of teens and older youth, not involved in the juvenile justice or social services system, in a temporary homeless situation. The Children’s Home Society provides training, a small financial stipend, and 24-hour support to the volunteer families. A Colossal Yard Sale will be held by FaithLink at the Emmanuel Baptist Church located at 1710 23rd Street, Parkersburg on Friday, August 7th from 8:00 a.m.to 3:00 p.m. and on Saturday, August 8th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon. Donations would be appreciated and are being accepted at Hope House beside the Emmanuel Baptist Church on Thursday, July 23rd from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, July 28th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. , and on Thursday, August 6th from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. No Clothing! The proceeds of the Benefit Sale will be divided half to FaithLink which is a volunteer program of assistance to elderly, and half to the Mission to Honduras. Volunteers are most welcome. The Wood County Habitat for Humanity would welcome volunteers in the construction of a new home located on Winding Ridge Road. Volunteers are needed on Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays of each week from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. In addition to the construction work, the Wood County Habitat for Humanity ReStore is expanding! The Habitat for Humanity is looking for volunteers who are willing to work a minimum of one 4-hour shift per week. The Habitat for Humanity is seeking two types of volunteers: (1) Customer Service Specialty whose duties would include greeting and assisting customers, answering telephone calls, and using a cash register; (2) Material Handlers whose duties would include accepting donated materials, assisting with pick-up of materials, pricing, cleaning, and arranging items in the ReStore. Volunteers are needed!!! The Mission of Mercy Dental Clinic Program will be held at WVU at Parkersburg on Friday, July 31st and Saturday, August 1st from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This is a free clinic for persons 18 of age of older. The Program is seeking volunteers in many areas, and it is not necessary to have dental or medical training to be a volunteer at the Clinic. To register as a volunteer, please go to MOVHD or contact the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department at 304-485-7374, extension 182.

The Wood County Family Resource Network is having a Homeless Count on July 24th from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Donations would be most welcomed for the 30 goody bags being prepared. The following is a list of suggested items for the goody bags. Personal Hygiene items could be soap, combs, lotion, matches, pens, pencils, sanitizers, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, towels and wash cloths, socks, and towelettes. Food items could be bottled water, graham cracker sticks, granola bars, hot chocolate, peanut butter crackers, peanuts, plastic ware, and potted meats. Clothing items could be caps, gloves, socks, and footies. Items can be dropped off at the Family Resource Network located at 914 Market Street, Suite, 304, Parkersburg from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. A Colossal Yard Sale will be held by FaithLink at the Emmanuel Baptist Church located at 1710 23rd Street, Parkersburg, on Friday, August 7th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Saturday, August 8th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon. Donations would be appreciated and are being accepted at Hope House beside the Emmanuel Baptist Church on Thursday, July 23rd from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, July 28th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and on Thursday, August 6th from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. No Clothing! The proceeds of the Benefit Sale will be divided half to FaithLink which is a volunteer program of assistance to elderly, and half to the Mission to Honduras. Volunteers are welcome. The Girl Scouts of the Black Diamond Council could use volunteers to assist in the many activities they are involved with. The Girl Scouts build girls of courage, confidence and character. Perhaps you have an interest in becoming a Girl Scout, to share in the learning and fun activities. One of the fun activities will be the Vacation Destination Evening Camp for grades K-12 to be held August 3rd – 6th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. each night. You could go on vacation to Disney at Halsgrove Park in Belpre, to the Old West at Ft. Boreman, to Mardi Gras at the Parkersburg City Park, and the Hawaiian Beach. Mountwood Park would welcome volunteers to serve on the Friends of Mountwood, which is a volunteer organization dedicated to preserving and protecting Mountwood Park. The 2nd Annual Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social will be held at Mountwood Park on Saturday, August 8th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and a picnic lunch, or have a hotdog on the grill. Activities will include Music; Games, such as Bingo, Croquet, Horseshoes, Volleyball and Bocce Ball; Ice Cream; and Socializing. Enjoy a sternwheeler ride to historic Blennerhassett Island on July 25th and partake in the Island Frolic with Evening Meal. Volunteers are always welcome at the Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park and the Blennerhasssett Museum to participate in the various activities held at both the Park and the Museum. If you have some time to spare this summer between June 29th and August 7th, the Energy Express could use your help. Energy Express is a program designed for students to have fun with reading, writing, art, drama, and recreation along with breakfast and lunch. The Program is being offered at Madison Elementary School, Martin Elementary School, and Franklin Elementary Center from 8:30 a.m. to 12.00 Noon, Monday through Friday. The Willows Nursing Home is looking for volunteers to work with the residents on a one-on-one basis such as reading to them and visiting with them. Volunteers are also needed to assist with the activities provided to the residents. The Heaven Sent Daycare would welcome volunteers to assist in their childcare center by reading to the children, supervising the children during circle time, and show and tell time. The Children’s Home Society of WV is in need of Host Homes to serve the short-term housing need of teens and older youth, not involved in the juvenile justice or social services system, in a temporary homeless situation. The Arts & Animals Kid’s Fun Fest presented by Artsbridge will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2009, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Parkersburg City Park Pavillion. Featured is “Divas & Dogs” a nationally known act as seen on Animal Planet, A&E, and Cirque DuSoleil. There will also be Music and Dance Performances, Interactive Art Stops, Face Painting, Clowns, Balloons and much more. This Fun Fest is free. VAC History and Mission

The Volunteer Action Center was founded in 1995 to promote volunteerism and build the capacity of non-profit organizations. It has held numerous workshops and conferences during the past several years, including Volunteers Are Cornerstones; It’s A Wrap: Year End Financial Tasks for Non-Profits; Volunteers Nurture By Nature; A Match Made in Heaven; and Firm Foundations: – A Financial Workshop for Non-Profits.

The Volunteer Action Center also offers an Information and Referral Program, linking callers to a state- wide data base of thousands of health and human services by calling 424-3457 or simply 2-1-1.

The VAC also mobilizes volunteers to help people who are elderly, chronically ill, and/or disabled remain independent at home through its FaithLink program.

VolunteerWV matches people who want to volunteer with agencies and individuals who need volunteers, and the VAC’s Center for Community Service Agencies allows numerous non-profit organizations to cut their overhead costs by sharing services, personnel, equipment, and facilities.
