The Festival could use a couple of volunteers to help sell raffle tickets during the Festival for whatever amount of time volunteers might be able to donate. Also need a couple of volunteers to help out with children's games which will include Sack the Castle, Golf, Design Your Own Tartan Coloring Contest, make a Shamrock Necklace, etc. All supplies for the various activities will be provided, and volunteers will be instructed on any simple craft projects before starting; it's mostly just overseeing. Volunteers with the committee will be available if there are concerns, questions, etc. Those who volunteer to help out can have free admission all day for the Festival. The PS Project would welcome donations of office supplies, food, towels, sheets, personal care products, furniture and household supplies. This Program provides transportation to cancer patients to enable them to get to their scheduled doctor’s appointments, tests, and treatments.  Drivers would need to have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and insurance.  The driver can choose the days he wishes to drive a patient.  There would be training available for all drivers.  The drivers do not have to do any lifting.  They only need to transport the patient from home to hospital/doctor office and back.  The American Cancer Society is also looking for volunteers for the Reach to Recovery Program.  This Program provides a trained facilitator to work on a one-on-one basis with a breast cancer patient. They are in need of direct “friendly visiting” volunteers to provide respite for a caregiver and/or companionship for a terminally ill person.  Visits average about 2 to 3 hours per week.  Extensive training and TB test provided.  Background and reference checks are required.  Their hospice brings service to the home or facility where the patient lives. If you could spare an hour or two of your time during the busy holiday season, here are a few opportunities that may be of interest to you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The First Presbyterian Church will be holding their annual Mid-Ohio Valley Community Christmas Day Dinner from Noon to 2:30 p.m. on Christmas Day in their Stevenson Hall located at 1341 Juliana Street, Parkersburg.  Rides to and from the church will be provided for those who need transportation, and meals will be delivered to the shut-ins.  If you have any homebound friends who would like a meal, or simply a Christmas visit, please contact the Church by December 22nd with their name, telephone number, and specific directions to their home.  The Church would welcome volunteers for visitation and for meal delivery.  If you have a van and driver available on Christmas Day, the Church would appreciate knowing about this. Duties would include, in general, overseeing the homeless that come to the day shelter, perhaps making coffee and making conversation. As a volunteer you could interact with the children, play with the children, read to the children, and keep the children entertained.  The Day Nursery is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Heaven Sent Daycare would welcome volunteers to assist in their childcare center by reading to the children, supervising the children during circle time, and show and tell time. The Center provides daytime supervision for seniors, and they create activities to keep each client both active in body as well as in mind. The Humane Society would welcome volunteers at least 16 years of age, of if younger, accompanied by an adult.  Volunteers must complete an application form and attend a volunteer orientation session class which is held every month and requires scheduling in advance.  As a volunteer, you could walk the dogs; cuddle the cats; take animals to nursing homes, hospitals for visitations; help with special events such as open house, rummage sale, basket bingo, etc.; volunteer your handyman services such as inside repairs, cleaning, painting, fix-ups; just to name a few opportunities. If you interested in donating items, the Humane Society has a Wish List of items that are needed on a daily basis. The painting is being raffled for $5.00 a ticket, with the drawing being held on December 21, 2009.  The proceeds from such raffle will be used to buy dry cat food for the Cat Program which is extremely low on food at the present time.  If you would like to volunteer, the Program would like you to attend a monthly meeting to acquaint yourself with who they are and what they do.  The mission statement of the Program is dedicated to the well-being of free-roaming and feral cats/kittens, and their goal is to educate society of the importance of (TNR), Trap, Neuter and Return, and Colony Management. Their new office space is located on the ground level at 912 Market Street (the old VA Clinic in the same building as the Wood County Senior Citizens).  The&lt;b&gt; Arc&lt;/b&gt; is moving from 521 Market Street with a targeted moving date of December 10&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; &amp;amp; 11&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt;.  Volunteers are needed at the new location to do the following:  cleaning wallpaper, patching holes and sanding, painting walls, painting door trim, cleaning and waxing floors, cleaning carpet, shelving needs to be assembled as well as unloading trucks.  At the current location, volunteers are needed to help with packing, cleaning, and organizing items for the move. The painting is currently on display at Pet Supplies Plus next to T.J. Maxx.  The proceeds will be used to buy dry cat food for the Cat Program which is extremely low on food at the present time. Volunteers are also needed on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. while the parents attend support groups.  If you like doing crafts with children, reading stories to children, and doing other activities with children, you are the volunteer that this Program is looking for. As a volunteer, you would sort, clean, repair, and tag donated items.  The Shops are always looking for quality furniture, household items, electronics, small appliances, jewelry, and clothing.  If you have items left over from a garage or yard sale, the Noah’s Arc Thrift Shops will be glad to take them off your hands.  Volunteers are welcome every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.  On Saturdays, volunteers are especially needed from 2:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. to receive donations. Applicants can work one day a week for 4 to 5 hours or choose other arrangements that are more convenient for them.  This volunteer job often appeals to women who have a son or other relative in law enforcement or the military.  Men who have a military background or who have always had an interest in law enforcement also seem to enjoy it.  This is a very comfortable work setting. You will be trained individually until you are comfortable working on your own.  An excellent way to support our local law enforcement, as well as the entire community.  This could be a great opportunity for married couples or friends who would like to volunteer together. There is something for the whole family, so come and join them and meet their 2009 Miss Volcano.  Volunteers are welcome at each monthly event held at Mountwood. The Center provides daytime supervision for seniors, and they create activities to keep each client both active in body as well as in mind.  The Center is set up to accommodate people on a weekly basis, monthly basis, or just day-to-day basis.  The Center has the capacity to serve 25-30 people. The Club may visit the local hospitals, nursing homes, birthday parties, grand openings, especially at parades, and occasionally at schools.  Members supply their own costumes and make-up. The Youth Advisory Board meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Parkersburg City Building, with Mayor Newell in attendance. Volunteers would use their own vehicle to deliver meals to the shutins in the Parkersburg area.  Volunteers come in about 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and load such meals in their vehicle for delivery.  The Salvation Army likes to have all meals delivered before 12:00 noon.  Such volunteer drivers would have approximately 6 to 7 stops on their route, and delivery takes less than 1 hour.   Volunteers are also needed to help serve the evening hot meal from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army. Hospice offers three (3) types of volunteer opportunities:  Direct Care Volunteers, age 16 and older; Clerical/Administrative Volunteers, 12 and older; Special Projects Volunteers, of any age.  New Hospice Volunteers participate in free training, and on average, give 4-8 hours per month.  If you like to make a difference, are non-judgemental, are caring, and are compassionate, you have the qualities to become a Hospice Volunteer. This environmentally friendly educational program is know as the Green Jobs for Girls in the Future and is geared toward girls in middle school.  If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity and would like additional information in regard to the Green Jobs for Girls in the Future, please contact the Volunteer Action Center at 304-424-3457.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dudley Avenue Adult Center has recently opened in Parkersburg and would welcome volunteers as well as new clients.  The Center provides daytime supervision for seniors, and they create activities to keep each client both active in body as well as in mind.  The Center is setup to accommodate people on a weekly basis, monthly basis, or just day-to-day basis.  The Center has the capacity to serve 25-30 people.  If you are interested in these services for seniors or you are interested in volunteering some of your time at the Center and would like additional information, please call Dorthy Fordyce, Geriatric Care Specialist, at 304-424-5005.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Wood County Habitat for Humanity is expanding their ReStore and they are looking for two types of volunteers who are willing to work a minimum of one four-hour shift per week.  Volunteers are needed as (1) Customer Service Specialists whose duties would include greeting and assisting customers, answering telephone calls, and using the cash register; (2) Material Handlers whose duties would include accepting donated materials, assisting with pick-up of materials, pricing, cleaning, and arranging items in the ReStore.  The Habitat for Humanity would also welcome volunteers in the construction of a new home located on Winding Ridge Road. Children are ineligible who have Medicaid or Children's Health Insurance, or those children who have commercial coverage that include this benefit. Donations of supplies and financial support from the ommunity are crucial to keeping this valuable program ongoing.  They are hopeful that your organization will consider an investment in this project. Items needed are:  No. 2 pencils, 70 ct. spiral notebooks, folders, pens (blue,black, and/or red), college ruled paper, wide ruled paper and standard crayons. Energy Express is a program designed for students to have fun with reading, writing, art, drama, and recreation along with breakfast and lunch.  Volunteers are also needed as servers in the kitchen.  The Program is being offered at Madison Elementary School, Martin Elementary School, and Franklin Elementary School from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 Noon.  If your interest should go a little further than just a few hours, the West Virginia University Extension Office is in need of volunteers to be part of their “Reading Train”, in which volunteers would go from room to room reading with children. The Children’s Home Society provides training, a small financial stipend, and 24-hour support to the volunteer families.
